Slim Down Your Grocery Bill in 7 Steps

  1. Take advantage of the manager specials. Many grocery stores will mark down items such as meat and bread to clear them off the shelves before the sell-by date. Meat is one of the most expensive items added to grocery lists; so if you can save on meat, then you can cut down your bill considerably. The magical thing about buying meat and bread on manager’s special? Both are freezable! Stock up when you spot a good deal.
  2. Opt for a basket or a small cart. An article from Consumerist found that shoppers bought a whopping 40% more at the grocery store after manufacturers doubled the size of shopping carts. A cart with less room for extras will help you stick to the essentials.
  3. Check for sales in the weekly circulars of your local grocery stores. Compare the sales at each store to find the best deals on the items on your shopping list.
  4. Stay away from pre-portioned packages. While pre-packaged foods are convenient, their prices usually aren’t. Buying food in bulk and then portioning it out saves more money than most people realize. Crackers, yogurt, nuts, and chicken breasts are just a few items that can be easily portioned into zip-lock baggies.
  5. Be open to trying new brands. While most shoppers are brand-loyal, it doesn’t hurt to branch out a little if a different brand is on sale. Trying new things won’t hurt, we promise.
  6. Buy whole produce rather than pre-packaged. Again, buying pre-packaged foods is not cost effective, and chances are you only need one or two of each produce item. Handpicking whole items allows you to take only what you need. Since prices are usually per weight or item, you have control over how much or how little you want to spend. Another bonus – you get to pick the best produce!
  7. Make a list, and stick to it. Stepping into the grocery store without a list will undoubtedly cause you to add items you don’t actually need to your cart. Remember that the grocery bill inflates every time you decide to throw an extra item in your cart. If it’s not on your list, put it back on the shelf.
